A songwriter's joyful return to instrumental music

Soon and Again Piano Solos Margie Adam

Reviewed by Andrea L.T. Peterson

A full 16 years after her groundbreaking instrumental debut Naked Keys, singersongwriter Margie Adam-one of women's music's most amazing founders-breaks forth with Soon and Again, a collection of breathtaking piano solos co-produced with Windham Hill recording artist Barbara Higbie.

Adam, best known for her witty, politically correct, politically astute, yet intensely intimate performances, has once again revealed herself as an innovative artist who defies characterization. With a brief collection of just ten original pieces, Adam has choreographed a musical dialogue that is so intimate a portrait of its creator that the sensation of Adam present, performing in person cannot be shaken.

Composing piano solos, says Adam, is considerably more challenging than writing songs with lyrics. "Lyrics and the vocal lines drive the music and tell me where it should go," she explains.

Piano solos emerge, without warning and without signposts along the way to indicate the need to turn away or stay the course. Hence, Soon and Again is the result of five years of hard labor that included rigorous

attention as well as a readiness to unfold with the music and journey from beginning to end of each new piece.

Laden with paradox, this collection is as

Margie Adam

relaxing and calming as it is uplifting and invigorating. Luled into a tranquil state by the time Adam gets to track six, “Go AheadTry Me" listeners should not be surprised to feel simultaneously inspired by the creative force of Adam's music.

Soon and Again--simply joyful, yet profoundly provocative is nothing less than 40 minutes of pure listening pleasure.

BOOKS

Encouraging stories for coming out on the job

Out in the Workplace compiled by Richard Rasi and Lourdes Rodriguez-Nogues

by Ken Bradley

Out in the Workplace is a collection of personal stories about the coming-out process at work. Richard Rasi and Lourdes

Richard Rasi

e-

RodriguezNogues used mail, the Internet, posters and ads in gay and lesbian newspapers to collect the stories. Many of the storytellers carried the internalized homo

phobia they learned from their families over to their new families at work. To "make up" for being gay or lesbian, they worked harder than their co-workers. Out of fear of offending anyone, they dared not even hint at their sexuality.

While coming out, the storytellers learned self-love and self-respect. They stopped being anonymous and lonely, and started to appreciate their uniqueness, simply to be themselves and proud of it.

Fortunately, most found that life was much easier after coming out. Most of their coworkers were supportive or did not consider it a big deal. What was interesting was the ones who were the most educated-doctors

and lawyers-and thought to be the most accepting, turned out to be the most homophobic.

Most of the stories in this book come from the white-collar environment, which the editors admit is unfortunate. In a white-collar job there is fear of mental harassment and possible loss of one's job. A blue-collar employee's life may also be in jeopardy by coming out.

A friend of mine who worked for a treecutting service was outed on the job. Upon discovering this, a supervisor encouraged other employees to "accidently" drop logs on the outed employee. Eventually the physical and mental stress was

too

much and my friend had to quit. After

the supervisor's

brother died Lourdes Rodriguez-Nogues of AIDS, he

tried to reconcile with my friend, but his gesture was rebuked. Homophobia cuts both ways.

Coming out at work may not be possible for everyone due to their personal circumstances, but this book is very helpful for those who want to be out on the job. It makes for a happier and more productive employee and helps remove our invisibility in the workforce. People knowing they work with gays every day does more to change society's opinion of us than legislative change. People are unwilling to accept gays more from ignorance than anything else. The truth will set us all free.
